Rotorua’s Wildlife

Rotorua is surrounded by native bush and farms, making it the perfect environment for Rainbow Springs Nature Park and Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park. These wildlife parks are great entertainment, whatever the season, for young children, or the young at heart.
Rainbow Springs Nature Park

See magnificent specimens of Rainbow, Brown and Tiger trout, and Brook Char, cruising the clear fern-fringed pools at Rainbow Springs, one of Rotorua’s great wildlife parks.

The large aviaries at Rainbow Springs are also home to many of New Zealand’s native birds. A truly remarkable sight is the Tuatara, a species endemic to New Zealand and a real dinosaur of the past.

Tuataras are normally only found on New Zealand’s off-shore islands, so this is a great opportunity to view these spectacular creatures.

The Kiwi Encounter at Rainbow Springs invites you to get right up close to New Zealand’s national icon – and one of Rotorua’s special attractions! Kiwi eggs from the wild are incubated, hatched and raised right here at Rainbow Springs before being released back into the wild. Your admission includes a 45 minute guided tour of this conservation in action. Reservations are essential.
Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park

Kids (and big kids too!) will enjoy seeing a pride of wild lions at Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park, just a short drive from Rotorua town centre. The best time to visit is 2.30pm – feeding time! You can even pat gorgeous lion cubs when available (and have your photo taken with them).

Paradise Valley Springs is also a beautiful trout, bird and wildlife sanctuary, set in native bush. There are freshwater springs (some of the purest drinking water in the world!), pools and a beautiful trout stream. You can hand-feed most of the animals, and your admission includes feed.
